<p><strong>The Impact You’ll Make in this Role</strong></p>
<p>As Nutrition Technician, you will perform a variety of tasks related to the storage, preparation, rotation, sanitation, and delivery of animal feed and cleaning supplies in the zoo, as well as the delivery of hay including heavy manual labor when needed. This must be done in accordance with USDA regulations. Your shift will begin at 5:00 a.m. and we do not have direct contact with the animals. The work requires an amount of independent action with less immediate supervision given after experience is acquired.</p>
<p>As a Nutrition Technician, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:</p>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Safely operate motor vehicles, hay tug, forklift, and operating mechanical equipment.</li>
<li>Safely operate food service equipment including food grinders, dicers, and mixers.</li>
<li>Prepare animal diets according to formulas and feeding schedules.</li>
<li>Prepare and deliver food items through the Zoo often prior to daylight.</li>
<li>Accept food and supply orders, stock and appropriately rotate food items.</li>
<li>Dispense dry goods and cleaning supplies to various locations.</li>
<li>Perform proper food rotation, restocking, and reporting low inventory.</li>
<li>Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.</li>
<li>Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.</li>
<li>Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest &#8211; do not wait to be asked.</li>
<li>Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.</li>
<li>Any and all other duties as assigned.</li>

<p><strong>Your Skills and Expertise </strong></p>
<p>To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:</p>

<li>Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.</li>
<li>Associate degree in nutrition, wildlife management, zoology, biology or related field.</li>
<li>Knowledge of animal nutrition, behavior and biology.</li>
<li>Knowledge of food sanitation and food handling procedures.</li>
<li>Ability to safely operate food services equipment and light motor vehicles.</li>
<li>Ability to follow oral and written instructions.</li>
<li>Ability to open, enter/exit, and secure animal enclosures and service areas.</li>
<li>A strong desire to work with animals as indicated by educational background and/or previous experience.</li>
<li>One-year zoo keeping or animal nutrition experience.</li>

As an Animal Care Specialist with our Mammals West department, you will perform a wide variety of tasks related to providing proper husbandry and ensuring the wellbeing of the animals here.  You will be responsible for ensuring suitable medical treatments of zoo animals following instructions of Zoo Veterinarians, daily cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and service areas.</p>

<p><u>Daily Care</u></p>
<ul>
<li>General husbandry and daily care of assigned animals, including preparing and distributing approved animal diets.</li>
<li>Inspect, clean, and maintain both on-exhibit and off-exhibit areas.</li>
<li>Demonstrate critical thinking skills with the ability to maintain, train, and troubleshoot complex animal behavior daily.</li>
<li>Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.</li>
<li>Knowledge of safety SOPs, safety concerns, and reporting protocols.</li>
<li>Demonstrate the ability to assist other team members with their animal-related goals and challenges.</li>
<li>All work must adhere to the industry best practices, safety protocols, standards, and guidelines established by San Antonio Zoo, governing agencies, and regulatory/accrediting bodies.</li>
<li>Uphold all company policies as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.</li>
<li>Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside of the zoo, showing hospitality to all.</li>

<p><u>Animal Wellbeing</u></p>
<ul>
<li>Utilize daily behavioral observations, animal training, and operant conditioning techniques to maintain current behaviors and build new repertoire in experienced and naïve animals.</li>
<li>Continually observe and evaluate animal behavior and conditions for animals in the department and report any issues to your manager.</li>
<li>Perform regular animal wellbeing assessments.</li>
<li>Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.</li>
<li>Propose and perform species specific enrichment.</li>
</ul>
<p><u>Safety </u></p>
<ul>
<li>Exercise sound judgment in analyzing animal concerns or emergencies and respond with the appropriate action</li>
<li>Work safely around delicate, wild, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous animals.</li>
<li>Delicately handle, examine, and move without harming sick, injured, or small animals.</li>
<li>Have sufficient strength, agility, and coordination to net, capture, and/or restrain animals of various sizes.</li>
<li>Secure animals, their enclosures, and other associated structures for the safety of our internal and external guests.</li>
</ul>
<p><u>Collaboration</u></p>
<ul>
<li>Assist veterinary staff in the treatment of zoo animals.</li>
<li>Assist in animal procedures including, but not limited to, translocations, veterinary practices, and crating.</li>
<li>Effectively document and communicate issues or concerns to team members and management.</li>
<li>Participate in or assist with the capture and restraint of a variety of taxa, including dangerous species.</li>
</ul>
<p><u>Creating Community</u></p>
<ul>
<li>Engage with the Zoo guests as well as staff and volunteers at habitats to include VIP programs and training demonstrations, and/or shows.</li>
<li>Promote active guest engagement through interactions during both formal and informal discussions and events.</li>

<li>Study-specific reference materials pertinent to animal care, behavior, and natural history as assigned.</li>

<li>Associate degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field preferred.</li>
<li>Minimum one-year zoo keeping experience is preferred.</li>
<li>Effective written and verbal communication skills are preferred.</li>
<li>You must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.</li>
<li>This position requires a valid Class &#8216;C&#8217; Texas Driver&#8217;s License or a valid driver&#8217;s license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class &#8220;C&#8221; Texas Driver&#8217;s License within 45 days of becoming employed.</li>
<li>Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test.</li>
<li>Must be able to work in varying climate and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).</li>
<li>We enjoy year-round operation for all staff- must be available days, nights, weekends, and occasional after-hour assignments.</li>

<p>As an Animal Ambassador, you will perform various tasks related to the handling and care of animals and their environments. You will work an amount of independent action with less immediate supervision earned after the experience is acquired. Additionally, animal Ambassadors provide educational information to the public through professional interpretative presentations and animal interactions. You will work daily with various mammals, including dangerous carnivores, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. The Animal Ambassador Team participates in onsite and offsite animal programs, events, and outreach in addition to their work on zoo grounds.</p>

<p>As an Animal Ambassador, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:</p>

<li>Observe, evaluate, and report animal behavior and condition to the manager daily.</li>
<li>Perform routine and special duties involved in the daily care and maintenance of animals in captivity, including regular maintenance of animal habitats and facility renovations</li>

<li>Handle and display presentation animals for both onsite and offsite programs, providing the public with educational information in a fun, professional manner</li>

<p>The Keeper/Trainer position is a full‑time, hourly role (five eight‑hour shifts per week). This role is hands‑on, physically demanding, and essential to the daily operation of the ranch. Responsibilities include:</p>

<li>Daily husbandry: feeding, weighing, diet preparation, cleaning, and exhibit maintenance</li>

<li>Monitoring animal behavior and welfare, reporting concerns promptly</li>
</ul>
<h3><strong>Guest Engagement &amp; Tours</strong></h3>

<li>Interacting with visitors and answering questions</li>
<li>Leading or assisting with tours, educational presentations, and guest experiences</li>
<li>Sharing stories about our animals and promoting conservation awareness</li>

<li>One (1) year zoo keeping experience is preferred</li>
<li>Experience in care and maintenance of venomous snakes, crocodilians, and large constrictors preferred.</li>
<li>Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.</li>
<li>Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.</li>
<li>We enjoy year-round operation for all staff, must be available day, nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional special after-hour assignments.</li>

<p><strong>The Impact You’ll Make in this Role</strong><br />
As an Animal Care Specialist with our Mammals East department, you will perform a wide variety of tasks related to providing proper husbandry and ensuring the wellbeing of the animals here.  You will be responsible for ensuring suitable medical treatments of zoo animals following instructions of Zoo Veterinarians as well as daily cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and service areas.</p>

<p><strong><u>Daily Care</u></strong></p>

<li>General husbandry and daily care of assigned animals, including preparing and distributing approved animal diets.</li>
<li>Inspect, clean, and maintain both on-exhibit and off-exhibit areas.</li>
<li>Demonstrate critical thinking skills with the ability to maintain, train, and troubleshoot complex animal behavior daily.</li>
<li>Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.</li>

<li>Demonstrate the ability to assist other team members with their animal-related goals and challenges.</li>

<li>Utilize daily behavioral observations, animal training, and operant conditioning techniques to maintain current behaviors and build new repertoire in experienced and naïve animals.</li>
<li>Continually observe and evaluate animal behavior and conditions for animals in the department and report any issues to your manager.</li>
<li>Perform regular animal wellbeing assessments.</li>
<li>Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.</li>
<li>Propose and perform species specific enrichment.</li>

As an Animal Care Specialist in the Aviculture Department, will be responsible for all aspects of daily animal care, maintenance of exhibits and plants, data collection, and documents. Knowledge and/or experience with husbandry for a diverse group of bird species is required. You will work involves an amount of independent action with less immediate leadership given after expertise is acquired.</p>

<li>Perform light maintenance work and repairs for exhibit features and fixtures. Report major maintenance concerns to leadership.</li>
<li>Safely operate equipment such as mowers, pressure washers, weed eaters, and power tools as needed.</li>

<li>Ability to identify, handle, examine, and transfer eggs safely.</li>
<li>Background of successful nesting and breeding of various bird species is preferred.</li>
<li>Ability to handle and properly restrain various bird species including large cranes, vultures, and parrots.</li>
<li>Experience with husbandry and care of large aviaries and smaller species focused bird habitats in a zoological setting.</li>
<li>Knowledge of proper plant care and maintenance preferred.</li>
<li>Knowledge or ability to learn various programs such as ZIMS, TRACKS, and more.</li>
<li>Knowledge of Life support systems preferred.</li>
<li>Ability to assist in overseeing, training, and evaluating volunteers and interns.</li>
<li>Ability to speak in front of guests and groups for animal chats as well as keeper behind the scenes tours.</li>
<li>Effective written and verbal communication skills preferred.</li>
<li>Responsible for completing all online training courses by assigned deadlines.</li>
<li>Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.</li>
