The Education Director of Will Smith Zoo School assumes a pivotal role in leading and overseeing the comprehensive development, implementation, management, oversight, and evaluation of our nature-based preschool and early childhood programming.</p>

<li>Develop, interpret, and contribute to early childhood research, practice, and resources regularly.</li>
<li>Engages in effective conflict-resolution strategies with families and family advocates, early childhood educators, specialists and service providers, community leaders, regulatory agencies, and policymakers</li>
<li>Ensure high-quality early childhood educational programming and act as a resource on pedagogical theory.</li>
<li>Ensure programs follow best practices for nature-based preschools, including guidelines set by NAAEE, NAEYC, and the Natural Start Alliance.</li>
<li>Ensure proper student assessment methods that align with the mission of Will Smith Zoo School and promote sustainability education.</li>
<li>Ensure the program is in alignment with San Antonio Zoo’s strategic direction and in compliance with regulatory requirements.</li>
<li>Foster the growth and expansion of the program, enhancing its capacity to provide transformative experiences for students.</li>
<li>Identify and address barriers to envisioning and developing an educational approach that differs from the traditional early childhood education. Create new ways of envisioning the profession and its role, and work to bring colleagues to the visioning process.</li>
<li>Identify resources and research that support developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate practice, which benefits all young children.</li>
<li>Interview, train, motivate, and supervise early childhood instructors, empowering them to actively engage children&#8217;s sense of wonder and exploration in relation to sustainability and the natural world.</li>
<li>Involves others in setting annual goals for program improvement, provides resources and support for meeting objectives, and assesses progress toward achieving program goals.</li>
<li>Oversee and ensure consistent implementation of a nature-based curriculum.</li>
<li>Provide financial, programmatic, and operational information to the Vice President of Education and recommend appropriate action.</li>
<li>Uphold all company policies as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.</li>

<p><strong>Staff Management and Development: </strong></p>

<li>Actively develop and maintain positive relationships with parents. Promote the importance of nature experiences with families and foster a sense of community that extends the nature-based knowledge beyond the preschool years.</li>
<li>Assure compliance with all relevant governmental and institutional regulations.</li>
<li>Carefully consider how departmental/personal goals fit into broader Zoo priorities and provide positive leadership and support for volunteers and other members of the Education Department and Zoo.</li>

<p><strong>Fiscal Responsibilities:</strong></p>

<li>Implement good business management strategies, including budgeting, reporting, tracking, and strategic planning.</li>
<li>Maintain all financial records and approve expenses.</li>
<li>Manage the annual budget to ensure operational costs are consistent with the financial philosophy of the school.</li>
<li>Prepare an annual budget to be approved by the Board of Directors</li>

<p><strong>Your Skills and Expertise </strong><br />
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:</p>

<li>Bachelor&#8217;s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field is required.</li>
<li>Three (3) years of experience in nature-based education, prefer a background in nature-based preschool or similar experience is required.</li>
<li>Three (3) or more years of experience as director of the state-licensed child-care facility is required.</li>
<li>Hold a valid Child Care Center Director&#8217;s Certificate from the State of Texas or has the qualifications to obtain a certificate within 30 days of hire.</li>
<li>Experience in financial management, including budget development, financial reporting, and oversight.</li>
<li>Strong pedagogical foundations and understanding of current research in emergent and nature-based education, social emotional learning, and inclusive education practices.</li>
<li>Demonstrated leadership experience in strategic planning, public speaking, facilitating meetings, managing projects, and developing policies and procedures.</li>
<li>Experience building relationships and creating shared purpose among groups with diverse needs and perspectives, including staff, volunteers, partners, families, students, and community members.</li>
<li>Strong background in state licensing regulations, staffing, enrollment and budget management</li>
<li>Experience in financial management, including budget development, financial reporting, and oversight.</li>
<li>Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in education and creating positive community work culture.</li>
<li>Believes in, values, and is committed to leadership development that empowers, encourages, cultivates, and supports others to become agents of change.</li>
<li>Demonstrated highly effective organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.</li>

<p><em>Responsible for assisting the Wild Encounters team with the overall care and well-being of the Wild Encounters collection, ensuring that all welfare best practices and safety standards are followed.  Provides various presentations and tours, which engage and educate the public, promote the Zoo, generate support from sponsors and assist with events on Zoo grounds.</em></p>

<p><strong>Husbandry / Care Responsibilities</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Assists the Wild Encounters team in the overall care and well-being of the region’s animal collection (e.g., animal health, disease diagnosis and treatment, husbandry, animal nutrition, enrichment and other activities related to animal care).</li>
<li>Works in compliance with animal wellbeing, best practices and all professional standards.</li>
<li>Provides daily care and assists with training of the Wild Encounters collection assigned to the department.</li>
<li>Cleans and maintains animal exhibit areas, performs basic horticulture work (e.g. caring for region’s egress/ingress, general grounds beautification) and disinfects animal enclosures.</li>
<li>Responsible for the storage, thawing and processing of daily diets following written diet plans.</li>
<li>Responsible for gaining an understanding of diet manipulation with guidance from a Senior Specialist.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Presentation Responsibilities</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Must be able to speak publicly and present daily programs professionally.</li>
<li>Provides support for V.I.P. or other designated events.</li>
<li>Provides \\\&#8221;Behind-the-Scenes\\\&#8221; tours of Zoo exhibits as requested.</li>
<li>Cohesively work in free contact training sessions while presenting to audience and provide information about the animals and their behavior.</li>
<li>Assists with all on-grounds presentations and Wild Encounters to ensure high quality, engaging experiences for guests.</li>
<li>Make decisions regarding the safety of animals and people at display location.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Event Coordination</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Assists in the coordination and implementation of promotional appearances including but not limited to television, civic and service groups, charity events, festivals, Zoo special events, corporate events, schools, and miscellaneous programs.</li>
<li>Transports animals to scheduled programs.</li>
<li>Ensure daily program and presentation setup.</li>
<li>Conducts other programs as necessary.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Other Responsibilities</strong></p>

<li>Assists and ensures compliance with USDA, AZA, and ZAA inspections/accreditations and USDA.</li>

<p><strong>Degree/Experience Requirements</strong></p>

<li>Bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, biology or relevant field required. Four years of relevant zookeeping experience may be substituted for a degree.</li>
<li>High school diploma or equivalent required.</li>
<li>Experience in zookeeping (6 months to one year), or approved equivalent required.</li>
<li>Experience with public speaking, including presenting wildlife and conservation content.</li>
<li>Minimum six months’ animal husbandry and training experience working with ambassador animals including mammals, birds, and reptiles in a fluid presentation-style program.</li>
<li>Ability to successfully perform animal husbandry duties within a diverse animal collection preferred.</li>
<li>P.R./First Aid certification preferred.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Business Acumen</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Ability to understand, remain current, and comply with all professional standards and regulations including USDA, AZA, and ZAA.</li>
<li>Knowledge of animal and conservation issues required</li>

                    <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Summary:</strong><br />
To maintain and care for a variety of animals within the Zoo; to assist veterinary staff as needed; and to perform a variety of activities relative to the assigned area of responsibility. Positions at this level are initially expected to perform under immediate supervision, progressing to general supervision as knowledge operating of procedures is gained. This position is for 400 hours of work generally in the form of 10 weeks, 40-hour weeks.</p>
<p><strong>Essential Duties and Responsibilities: </strong><br />
• Feed and water animals in and around existing quarters; clean, sanitize, maintain, and repair animal quarters as required; sweep, dust, and mop floors<br />
• Prepare diets for animals; clean and maintain work area and food storage containers<br />
• Maintain adequate records on daily activities; observe animal behavior for signs of illness, weight loss/gain or injury; report any signs of illness or injury; assist veterinarians in minor operations or related activity as needed<br />
• Assist in the training of assigned animals, guide animals through daily routines according to established training schedules and guidelines<br />
• Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner<br />
• Care for new and quarantined animals when required; obtain and submit fecal samples as needed<br />
• Assist in directing the proper restraint, crating, moving, and uncrating of animals</p>

• Implement diet instructions specified by nutritionist<br />
• Maintain accurate records on animal behavior and prepare reports<br />
• Work independently in the absence of immediate supervision<br />
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions<br />
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing<br />
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work<br />
• Maintain mental capacity which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, prioritizing work activities, demonstrating intellectual capabilities<br />
• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting, walking, or standing for extended periods of time, working closely with others, operating assigned equipment</p>
<p><strong>Preferred Education and/or Experience: </strong><br />
• One year of increasingly responsible zoo keeping experience, compensation will be experience dependent<br />
• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized collegiate courses/training in zoology or a related field</p>
<p><strong>Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations:</strong><br />
• Must posses a valid Class &#8220;C&#8221; driver license</p>
<p><strong>Physical Demands: </strong><br />

<p>Safari West houses a wide variety of species including hoofstock, primates, birds and carnivores. Float keepers will be trained to work on several strings and will be assigned based on the needs of the department. This position will focus on the 3 strings that include our hoofstock species and some of our larger birds (i.e. crowned crane, sarus crane, ostrich). <p>Animal World &amp; Snake Farm Zoo is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented candidate to join our dynamic reptile team, working with a wide variety of herpetological species, including a large number of venomous snakes and crocodilians; previous experience with these is preferred, but not required. Other animals will include non-venomous snakes, lizards, turtles/tortoises, and amphibians. This position is responsible for the daily care, maintenance and observation of the assigned animal collection and associated facilities. The ideal candidate will have proven experience presenting to crowds and will be comfortable on a mic. Guest interaction, including shows and guest experiences, may be up to 50% of each day. This position requires an individual with a high degree of professional experience who takes pride in work well done. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader, team player, and positive coworker . The priorities for this position include attention to animal care and health, fostering a positive team environment, and accomplishing an excellent guest experience through shows, encounters, and informal interactions.</p>
<p>This position is ideally for an experienced reptile keeper with supervisory experience. This position has the potential to be promoted to a lead keeper position.</p>
<p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:</p>
<ul>
<li>Providing general husbandry for a wide range of animals through cleaning, diet preparation and distribution, watering, observing, enclosure upkeep, propagation, monitoring health, and medicating under veterinary supervision</li>
<li>Maintains animal habitats through regular maintenance, landscaping, oversight of life support systems including lighting, filtration, heating, and AC units, and care of living plants</li>
<li>Data collection and input into the animal records databases; assuring that appropriate records are kept on all husbandry including daily care and animal health</li>
<li>Exceptional use of time management techniques</li>
<li>Keeping all on- and off- exhibit areas clean, neat, and organized</li>

The successful candidate will need to maintain and develop a broad knowledge base on the proper husbandry of reptiles and the other animals in the collection. Candidates should have a proven record of animal care. Candidates will need to have good communication skills, be able to follow specific instructions, and communicate activities and observations clearly in writing and verbally. Applicants must be able to present to small and large crowds and work well with large groups of children. Physical requirements include working outdoors in any weather, lifting 50 pounds, and repetitive work such as raking and shoveling. Candidates must be comfortable using power tools and be proficient in construction and exhibit design.</p>

<p>Conservation is at the core of what we do. Through our various breeding programs and in conjunction with our Corporate Conservation Coordinator, we annually fund a myriad of conservation programs both nationally and internationally.</p>
<p><strong>We currently have a full-time opening available in our Carnivore/Penguin village section.</strong> This position requires a person with excellent observation skills and a strong work ethic (this role personally runs and trains Cheetahs, and oversees African Penguin breeding programs). Keeper will be responsible for the daily care of the animals. Full-time keepers are required to maintain their animal records as well as assist in breeding programs. We are looking for people with strong prior experience.<em><strong> Experience can be substituted for a degree</strong></em>.</p>

<p>​<strong>Requirements</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>*Big cat experience is required for this position*</strong></li>
<li>Primate, bird, and/or hoof stock experience.</li>
<li>A bachelor’s degree in science, Animal Science/Biology preferred.</li>
<li>A strong work ethic, good physical condition, and a willingness to learn.</li>
<li>Must be able to adhere to our strict personal appearance requirements, no visible tattoos permitted.</li>
<li>Maintain a non-smoking work environment</li>
<li>Have the ability to work in all weather conditions</li>
<li>Experience in using or willing to learn to use trucks, tractors, weed eaters, and other types of machinery</li>
<li>Minimum of 6 months of paid animal care</li>
<li>Valid Driver’s license</li>
<li>Must be able to work weekends and holidays</li>
<li>Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs</li>

What You’ll Do</strong></div>
<ul>
<li>Create meaningful connections between guests and animal conservation through safe, engaging, and educational experiences that inspire ongoing support for the park.</li>
<li>Maintain thorough knowledge of ambassador species and stay current on their conservation status.</li>
<li>Communicate effectively about animal ambassadors, answering guest questions and sharing conservation stories.</li>
<li>Train and reinforce behaviors following established protocols to support animal welfare and guest interaction.</li>
<li>Assist zookeepers with training sessions and provide constructive feedback to ensure consistency and quality.</li>
<li>Evaluate each ambassador session and document progress accurately in the Animal Care Software.</li>
<li>Uphold high standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism in all AES areas.</li>
<li>Provide occasional husbandry support to other Care Team departments as needed.</li>
</ul>
<div><strong>What You Bring</strong></div>

<li>1+ years of experience training animals in an ambassador setting or 2+ years of husbandry training experience.</li>
<li>Basic understanding of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training</li>

<p><strong>The Impact You’ll Make in this Role</strong></p>
<p>As Nutrition Technician, you will perform a variety of tasks related to the storage, preparation, rotation, sanitation, and delivery of animal feed and cleaning supplies in the zoo, as well as the delivery of hay including heavy manual labor when needed. This must be done in accordance with USDA regulations. Your shift will begin at 5:00 a.m. and we do not have direct contact with the animals. The work requires an amount of independent action with less immediate supervision given after experience is acquired.</p>
<p>As a Nutrition Technician, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:</p>

<li>Safely operate motor vehicles, hay tug, forklift, and operating mechanical equipment.</li>
<li>Safely operate food service equipment including food grinders, dicers, and mixers.</li>
<li>Prepare animal diets according to formulas and feeding schedules.</li>
<li>Prepare and deliver food items through the Zoo often prior to daylight.</li>
<li>Accept food and supply orders, stock and appropriately rotate food items.</li>
<li>Dispense dry goods and cleaning supplies to various locations.</li>
<li>Perform proper food rotation, restocking, and reporting low inventory.</li>
<li>Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.</li>
<li>Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.</li>
<li>Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest &#8211; do not wait to be asked.</li>
<li>Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.</li>
<li>Any and all other duties as assigned.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Your Skills and Expertise </strong></p>
<p>To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:</p>

<li>The AAT Manager acts as a liaison between the animal care specialists and senior leadership, helping to ensure adherence to policies and procedures while exhibiting behavior that demonstrates a commitment to reaching the goals and objectives of the department and mission of San Antonio Zoo.</li>
<li>This position will play a lead role in the evolution and continuation of San Antonio Zoo&#8217;s mission-based programming.</li>
<li>This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of behavioral husbandry, training, and enrichment and coordinating public presentations consistent with AZA accreditation standards.</li>
<li>Daily duties include but are not limited to: cleaning animal and keeper work areas, diet preparation and delivery, carrying out animal training sessions, treating any injured/diseased individuals as necessary, making observations and recognizing abnormal animal behavior/appearance, acting situations, and to respond with appropriate action.</li>

<li>Bachelor&#8217;s degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field is preferred.</li>
<li>Five (5) years of experience with progressive exotic animal care, behavior, and husbandry in a zoo or similar environment is preferred.</li>
<li>Knowledge/familiarity with AZA accreditation standards, code of ethics, and progressive husbandry standards. Familiar with ZAA, AHA, SSP, or other captive population management programs</li>
<li>Three (3) years of supervisory experience is preferred.</li>
<li>Three (3) years relevant experience in the practice of operant conditioning and goal-based enrichment in a zoo or aquarium setting. Understanding of principles and application of operant conditioning training for advanced husbandry behaviors and public demonstrations.</li>

<li>Experience with hand-rearing neonate animals and working with rescued, non-releasable wildlife for educational purposes preferred.</li>
<li>Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing animal behavior concerns or emergencies and to respond with the appropriate action.</li>
<li>Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to create and deliver educational presentations, interactive animal programs, tours, and potential media requests.</li>
<li>Must be highly motivated, organized, and solution-oriented: finding creative solutions to complex challenges with a willingness to adapt positively to change in a fast-paced environment.</li>
<li>Must be able to consistently establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, team members, interns, volunteers, and guests.</li>
<li>Familiarity with several standard software packages utilizing word-processing, presentations, spreadsheets, etc.</li>
<li>Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid Texas Class C driver’s license within 90 days of employment and a clean driving record for vehicle operation.</li>
<li>Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, Drug Screen, and TB test.</li>
