Job Description
Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park in Alto, Michigan is seeking a reliable and responsible candidate to join our animal care team. This candidate should be willing to work with a wide variety of species including birds, petting zoo animals- goats, alpaca, yak, etc;- giraffes, kangaroos, and other species. This position also has a small education component, so some comfort with public speaking or willingness to learn is expected. We are looking for someone with a passion for quality animal husbandry and conservation education.
Job Description
- Provide high quality husbandry by meeting the needs of every animal under their care. This includes providing clean water and fresh food daily, maintaining enclosures with proper hygiene and keeping them in good repair, and providing enrichment appropriate for each species.
- Maintaining records of the animals’ health, behavioral observations, training, enrichment, medical needs and general wellbeing.
- Positive reinforcement training.
- Keeping a clean and organized work station. This includes washing dishes, cobwebbing and dusting, sweeping, cleaning windows and doors.
- Public speaking through Keeper Talks and Animal Encounters.
- Be able to work independently while maintaining strong communication with the team.
- Able to lift 50lbs.
- Work weekends, holidays and the occasional evening event.
- Willing to work in all weather conditions- shoveling in the heat, snow, rain and mud.
- Knowledge of USDA standards and willingness to go above and beyond these standards.
Bachelor’s degree in zoology or similar field is preferred but not required. Preference will go to candidates with exotic husbandry experience.
This position is full time and will require working weekends and some holidays. Salary will depend on level of experience. Accrued sick time. Paid vacation after 2
