Job Description
Austin Zoo is currently seeking a full-time Zoo Educator. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, scout workshops, family nature experiences, homeschool programs and early childhood programs. This role also involves one day school holiday camps, managing ten weeks of summer camp, writing curriculum, planning and organizing special programs such as our annual Homeschool Day, Boo at the Zoo animal shows and our annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts and animal encounters.
This position involves handling a variety of small ambassador animals.
Required Experience and Education:
Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Education, or related field from an accredited college or university. Previous professional animal
care experience (privately owned pets not included) strongly desired.
Previous youth program experience required.
Responsibilities include:
• Enthusiastically engage guests in inquiry-based learning activities.
• Engage zoo guests in strategically framed discussions regarding conservation and animal welfare.
• Demonstrate and encourage respect for animals during education programs and animal encounters.
• Curriculum, program development and lesson design.
• Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Aptitudes:
• Demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in animal and environmental education.
• Enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities.
• Ability to adapt and make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed.
• Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure.
• Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people.
• Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient and able to work both independently and with a team.
• Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions, extreme heat or cold.
• Collaborate with Managing Education Director on program, curriculum and lesson designs.
Additional Requirements:
- At least 18 years old.
- Possessa valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Ability to lift and move 50 lbs.
- Ideal candidate will work Wednesday – Sunday, special events and some evenings.
- Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
