Magnolia Wilds is an immersive wildlife experience and conservation-focused organization based in Ethel, Louisiana. Founded as an extension of Barn Hill Preserve’s mission to inspire environmental stewardship through education and up-close wildlife encounters, Magnolia Wilds brings together conservation, animal care, and public engagement in one family-friendly destination.

What began as a local animal preserve has evolved into a multifaceted experience offering Wild Discovery walking tours, Safari Wagon Adventures, interactive animal encounters (including capybaras, sloths, and parrots), and even zip lining. Our mission is to connect people with wildlife through memorable experiences, responsible care, and community education, while supporting global conservation initiatives like Kids Saving the Rainforest.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director supports the Executive Director in overseeing all day-to-day operations at Magnolia Wilds. This role blends leadership, administration, and hands-on involvement in animal care, staff management, programming, and guest services. The ideal candidate is an experienced, adaptable leader with strong organizational and communication skills who thrives in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Oversight

  • Assist in the management of daily operations across all parks.

  • Ensure all animal care, guest experiences, and safety protocols meet internal standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor site maintenance, cleanliness, and presentation to deliver an exceptional guest experience.

Staff Management

  • Supervise, train, and support department leads, interns, and seasonal staff.

  • Assist in scheduling and team performance reviews.

  • Foster a positive, communicative, and team-oriented work environment.

Guest Experience & Programming

  • Oversee execution of public tours, private events, and specialty programming.

  • Coordinate logistics for encounters, field trips, and seasonal attractions.

  • Monitor guest feedback and make improvements as needed to enhance satisfaction.

Administrative Duties

  • Support budgeting, supply ordering, and inventory control.

  • Help with compliance documentation, permits, and reporting.

  • Assist with marketing initiatives and community outreach when needed.

Animal Welfare & Ethics

  • Collaborate with animal care staff to maintain high standards of health, enrichment, and ethical handling.

  • Participate in wildlife education efforts and support ongoing conservation partnerships.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in the zoological field

  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams, logistics, and multiple priorities effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a guest-focused mindset

  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours as needed.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work outdoors in variable conditions, and handle a physically active role.
