Job Description
Position Overview
Wildlife World Zoo is seeking a dedicated and experienced Lead Safari Keeper to provide leadership and support for the daily management of the diverse animal collection within our Safari Park. The Safari collection includes large and small hoof stock, birds, primates, and small to medium-sized carnivores.
The Lead Safari Keeper is a hands-on supervisory position that works directly alongside keeper staff to ensure high standards of animal care, welfare, husbandry, and safety. This position provides day-to-day leadership for the Safari team, establishes priorities, coordinates daily assignments, and assists with animal husbandry, training, enrichment, and other animal management projects.
The Lead Safari Keeper will also serve as an important point of communication between keeper staff and management, helping ensure expectations, concerns, and animal care information are communicated effectively.
The successful candidate will foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment while promoting consistency, accountability, teamwork, and excellence in animal care. This position requires strong leadership skills, sound judgment, effective communication, and a commitment to advancing best practices in animal husbandry and welfare.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience working with large hoof stock
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role
- Strong knowledge of animal husbandry, nutrition, enrichment, operant conditioning, and behavioral observation
- Demonstrated ability to safely drive and operate trucks and other work vehicles
Requirements
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including temperatures exceeding 120°F
- Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces
- Must demonstrate emotional intelligence through effective communication, sound judgment, professionalism, and respectful interactions with employees, peers, and guests
Job Type & Expected Hours
- Full-time position, 40+ hours per week
- Weekend and holiday availability is required
Compensation
Hourly compensation is dependent on experience.
