Job Description

Job Title: Mammal Keeper

Reports To: Mammal Curator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary: $18-$20

The Mammal Keeper is responsible for interacting with guests, presenting shows, as well as taking care of a wide range of mammals and birds. This position will involve presenting public conservation keeper talks, conducting feeding demonstrations, giving guided tours, and providing excellent animal care, among other responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivers highly engaging and empowering interpretive programs with a concentration on making conservation and education fun
  • Creates exceptional guest experiences through innovative, exciting and inclusive animal-related programming.
  • Provides high-quality animal care for a wide range of mammals and Birds.
  • Adheres to and enforces all company policies and procedures paying special attention to health and/or safety procedures pertaining to dangerous animals. 
  • Participates in animal acquisition, population management programs, and animal enrichment programs.
  • Address customer concerns in a positive manner
  • Follow standard operating procedures and complete all tasks as assigned
  • Ensure cleanliness of assigned areas including light janitorial duties
  • Observation of animals to ensure health and well-being
  • Maintain our stand of care for all animals
  • Maintain proper animal handling skills
  • Follow all safety protocols and stay current on all safety drills
  • Maintains flexible schedule to include weekend, evening and holiday hours.
  • Attends required staff meetings and training.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times and displays exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Arrive on time to work and complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion
  • Must be capable of lifting to 50lbs on their own and 150lbs with a team member
  • Able to be on their feet for long periods of time
  • Must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills in dealing with customers and meeting their needs
  • Able to work with a team as well as independently
  • Must be comfortable working with animals of various species, sizes, dispositions, and difficulty levels, including dangerous animals
  • Possession of a valid State motor vehicle operator’s license with a good driving record required and to be able to pass a background check.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 2 year hands-on experience working with mammals at a zoo or similar facilty
  • 1-year Exotic Mammal Experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Education/Experience:

High School Diploma

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have general knowledge of MS Office software.
