Job Description

Veterinary Assistant/Hospital Keeper

Job Summary: We are seeking a team-oriented, dedicated, adaptable and passionate individual to join our team at Southwick’s Zoo.  This position would aid our veterinarian in providing high-quality, animal welfare focused, preventative and emergency medical and surgical care for the animals that call Southwick’s Zoo home.

This position reports directly to the Zoo Veterinarian.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Prepare for and aid veterinarian during clinical procedures by prepping the procedure space, setting up diagnostic imaging equipment, gathering sample collection supplies, calculating/drawing up medications/vaccinations/treatments, aiding in patient restraint, monitoring anesthesia, prepping and submitting laboratory samples (sample prep, completing requisition forms and packaging/shipping), cleaning and disinfecting equipment and clinic post-procedure.
  • Manage clinic pharmacy and supply inventory by helping with ordering, filling prescriptions, creating treatment sheets and restocking hospital shelves and field kits.
  • Execute general clinic upkeep including but not limited to – laundry, sweeping, mopping, equipment disinfection and cleaning/packing/autoclaving surgical tools.
  • Perform in-house laboratory tests such as fecals, urinalyses and basic bloodwork
  • Provide basic animal husbandry and administer medications and treatments to any hospitalized patients
  • Work with animal care staff on providing/administering treatments and monitoring care/welfare for current clinical cases, and neonatal or geriatric individuals.
  • Participate in behavioral training programs with animal care staff for medical/veterinary behaviors including voluntary injections, blood draws, auscultation and diagnostic imaging.
  • Help maintain paper and electronic medical records and drug logs
  • Coordinate, schedule and aid in instruction of veterinary student shadows/externs
  • Create preventative health care schedules including ecto/endoparasite medications, vaccine protocols, fecal monitoring, and routine/preventative healthcare exams
  • Aid in establishing and implementing quarantine protocols and biosecurity procedures.

Commitment: 30-35 hr/week

Pay (dependent upon experience & education): $22-26/hr
